Alan Baratz is Senior Vice President of the Network Software and Systems Technology Group at Cisco, where he leads software strategy, innovation, development, and delivery. His charter and global teams span software architecture, IP technology advancements, systems initiatives, engineering, testing, documentation, release, and maintenance.
Baratz has previously held leadership positions at established industry leaders, information technology startups, and private equite firms. As the first president of the Software Products and Platforms (JavaSoft) division at Sun Microsystems, he led the growth and adoption of the Java platform from its infancy to a robust platform supporting mission-critical applications in nearly 80 percent of the Fortune 1000 companies. He also held executive positions at IBM, was CEO and president of Versata, Inc., Zaplet Inc., and NeoPath Networks, and served as managing director at E.M. Warburg, Pincus & Co.
Baratz holds a doctorate and a master's degree in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a bachelor's degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of California Los Angeles.
