BlueArc Introduces the World's Fastest and Most Scalable Network Storage Solution

BlueArc's Si7500 is the First Storage System to Offer 2000 Megabits/second Throughput

March 27, 2001

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - PC Forum 2001 - and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.

BlueArc, provider of the world's highest performance network storage system, announced today the introduction of the BlueArc Si7500, the world's first network storage system capable of true multi-gigabit (2000 Megabits/second) throughput. The Si7500 scales to thousands of concurrent user connections and 250 Terabytes (TB) of storage capacity behind a single server.

The Si7500 Storage System, powered by BlueArc's revolutionary SiliconServer ™ architecture, brings together the ease-of-installation and management of a network attached storage (NAS) system, and the scalability and speed of a storage area network (SAN). With 99.999% solid-state reliability and performance far beyond that available from any existing system, the BlueArc Si7500 provides users with significantly lower total cost-of-ownership that can translate into an 80% saving of customers' capital investment over time.

"Over the past several years server throughput has been surpassed by network throughput as businesses transition into the optical age, implementing Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel networks. To compensate, these businesses have had to increase the number of file servers on their networks, which has led to escalating costs and administrative difficulties,'' said Enrico Pesatori, president and chief executive officer of BlueArc. "With the release of the Si7500, we have introduced a system that meets the demands of the optical age by dramatically increasing server performance, reducing management overhead and lowering total cost-of-ownership.''

"We are excited about the amazing speed with which the BlueArc Si7500 can backup huge databases,'' says Mike Jennings, vice president of Operations of Appshop, Inc. "We love the built-in NDMP support allowing LAN-free backup, removing the limitations of restrictive windows and eliminating network performance degradation during backup.''

BlueArc customers also receive the first network storage solution able to be upgraded remotely, without a technician onsite and with no system downtime. The Si7500's programmability and subsequent reliability was developed utilizing programmable logic devices from Altera Corporation. "We are pleased that the reconfigurability and flexibility provided by Altera's devices played an important role in the development of the BlueArc Si7500,'' said Tim Colleran, vice president of Product Marketing for Altera Corporation. "The SiliconServer architecture's use of hardware acceleration via Altera programmable logic puts Bluearc in position to deliver the highest possible performance to its customers.''

Compared with current leading network storage products, the Si7500 delivers 10 times the throughput, supports 100 times the user connections and over 30 times the storage capacity in a single system, enabling businesses to dramatically reduce server proliferation.
