BlueArc Titan 2200 Storage System Achieves
High Throughput Performance in Tolly Group Test

Titan 2200 certified "Up to Spec", achieves consistent high performance
in rigorous evaluation across multiple simulated customer environments

SAN JOSE, CA - May 24, 2006

BlueArc® Corporation, the world leader in network storage innovation, today announced that the Titan 2200 storage system has achieved impressive throughput results certified in an "Up to Spec" test conducted by The Tolly Group. The test evaluated Titan on a variety of workloads consistent with customer environments - including read tests, write tests, and mixed workload, and demonstrated sustained performance of more than 700 Megabytes per second from a single file server node, the fastest on the market today.

Tolly Group engineers focused tests on the average throughput of a single Titan 2200 node handling requests from 48 dual processor servers, featuring back-end SAN storage comprised of multiple Engenio storage system arrays, consolidated into a single storage pool, name space and file system. The Tolly Group, with a proven 17 year track record as an independent assessor to validate vendor performance claims, certified these results in a published report on its Web site, at www.tolly.com. (Document ID: 206132).

Test results show the Titan 2200 delivered exceptionally high levels of sustained read, write and mixed load performance for a single network storage server node, demonstrating throughput of 718MBps when handling mixed read/write I/O operations to disk. For read operations, the Titan 2200 sustained average read throughput of 656MBps. For write operations, the Titan 2200 sustained 450MBps of sustained write performance to disk. Additionally, to achieve even higher throughput results, Titan storage systems are also available in clustered configurations, offering linear scalability. Combined with an embedded global name space, clustered Titan systems, provide customers a single file structure across a cluster with the highest levels of scalable performance. In separate tests conducted this spring, the Titan 2200 also achieved world record single and dual node system performance in the SPECsfs97_R1.v3® benchmark, delivering single server performance of 98,131 ops/sec and dual server performance of 195,052 ops/sec.

The Tolly Group test consisted of client servers acting as load generators using the Iozone filesystem benchmark utility to generate load and measure performance results across all the servers. To test actual throughput to disk, a large 4 gigabyte file was used by each client to break both client memory cache and the Titan 2200 cache, ensuring real world measurable throughput performance instead of theoretical cached performance often quoted by vendors. To ensure uniform performance for varying size requests, record sizes of 4k, 8k, 32k and 64k were tested, with tests demonstrating uniform sustained throughput at all record sizes.

The UP TO SPEC certification assures end-users that equipment lives up to vendor promises. The Tolly Group tests are designed to evaluate products in an environment typically found in Fortune 1,000 companies. After rigorous testing and thorough evaluation, the UP TO SPEC certification is presented to products that perform as promised. Given The Tolly Group's position in the industry, the UP TO SPEC certification serves as a valuable resource for end-user product selection.

"BlueArc's Titan 2200 system delivers the type of performance needed to meet the storage requirements of an enterprise network," said Kevin Tolly, president/CEO of The Tolly Group. "The Titan 2200's sustained throughput of 718 MBps when handling mixed read/write operations represents the highest performance tested to date by The Tolly Group on a storage device."

"BlueArc customers demand the highest levels of performance from Titan to meet challenging infrastructure requirements, and The Tolly Group test results demonstrate that Titan 2200 has delivered," said Steve Daheb, vice president of marketing and business development for BlueArc. "With the industry's leading performance in both throughput and IOPS, our customers are able to accelerate applications or implement large scale file server consolidation, enabling better operational efficiencies, improved business processes, simplified management, and reduced cost of ownership."
