BlueArc Pushes Potential of Altera's Storage Systems

Leader in programmable logic systems selects BlueArc's SiliconServer

London, Olympia, UK, STORAGE EXPO, October 17th 2003

BlueArc, a leader in high performance, highly scalable network attached storage (NAS), today announced that Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR), the leader in programmable logic systems, is streamlining its existing use and network storage operations using BlueArc's network attached storage solution - the Si8300 SiliconServer. Delivering up to 7TB with a single server, Altera can now benefit from reduced costs and more flexible architecture.

Following a rigorous evaluation process, Altera invest igated Network Attached Storage (NAS), as an alternative to its existing Direct Attached Storage (DAS) system. Impressed with how BlueArc innovatively used field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) to build a high performance hardware based NAS server, Altera now benefits from:

  • Increased scalability, freeing the company from a continual process of juggling data between a number of UNIX and windows servers
  • Extended life of existing back-up Tape Libraries - resulting in cost savings and more efficient use of tape drives
  • Increased productivity through faster read and save times
  • Immediate restoration of deleted, lost or older version user data, saving many hours of lost productivity waiting for files to come back from tape archives
  • Ability to drive business process improvement by managing different classes of data on a single storage platform

"We were initially excited about BlueArc's server due to its use of Altera FPGAs, but after evaluating the various NAS boxes, the Blue Arc solution was clearly the best. We have had it now for more than a year without any failures." said Frank Hannig, CIO of Altera. "The migration to BlueArc's platform has enabled us to dramatically reduce the number of support and service calls logged with our IT department, and in terms of TCO, we have achieved much higher system availability, reduced support requirements and ultimately cut our backup time in half."

Altera UK had previously been working with Direct Attached Storage (DAS) on UNIX and Windows servers. Demand regularly exceeded capacity on the UNIX servers and Altera were facing an escalation in costs associated with running an increasing number of servers and a split storage space.

"BlueArc is the right storage architecture for our future needs, it has both the performance and scalability to painlessly meet our needs for storage growth and will significantly reduce costs" said Stuart Lunn, Computer Services Manager at Altera's High Wycombe facility.

In the complete rollout, data from 4 Windows file servers and 12 UNIX servers will be migrated to the BlueArc system, thereby removing the network-to-disk transfer bottlenecks associated with traditional servers.

"Market leading organisations like Altera require constant management of their data, and in today's demanding IT environments only the best storage platforms are capable of adequately supporting these needs. It was clear that Altera required the ability to quickly sort, share and protect its data whilst not experiencing any loss of productivity. BlueArc's SiliconServer architecture exists as a strategic long-term answer to the needs of demanding businesses and can provide a route to lower total cost of ownership while improving productivity and efficiency," said Geoff Barrall, founder and CTO of BlueArc.
